hi i have found a document to show that 5th grand daughter of one Bhangwe Bhambwimbwi who was a slave taken from malawi to zanzibar then india and them make a return to ujiji and join the fight against free slaves, i have the photos and i think its soo real his history my uncle told me that he found in the scotland museum, am a desendant of this old boy i think its better to include his history where necessary- maxwell kombe email me maxwell.kombe@gmail.com

The web site on Zanzibar is facinating and very interesting. Our relations as community from India(from Kutch Gujarat) is almost over 100 years old. Our people had very good relations with the ruling families of Zanzibar at that time. However, unfortunately nothing is mentioned in this site about gujarati or kutchi people. We even have books published about Zanzibar in Gujarati Language describing the deep trade relations between Zanzibar and Kutch in those days. However, the site gives lots of information but it is incomplete as many firms were working in Zanzibar in those days.

My fellow Zanzibaris, Hope you will agree with me that Zanzibar has never been an independent country except in few minutes, 1963. It was under WHITE colonizers in the past and its now a BLACK colony. Despite how bad were the white wakoloni they at least made Zanzibar excel in many aspects. Look, how prosperous was the Isles - the first to have wireless link with Europe, a railway line, world leading clove producer, to mention a few, of which many African countries hadnt even dreamed about those. Compare with Zanzibar of taday - we are 1000 steps backwards. I feel like the black wakoloni are our worst enemies. Take care!

I am Ram Sidi son of Sidibhai Bhura a vegetable grower at a Shamba ya tipura,Zanzibar.My father used to sell his vegetables at veg market near darajani. We first lived at Machangani near Hoilis road and later moved to Holis Rd in Mohamad Ali Pira Champsi's house .I remember his sons yusuf/pyarelal and mohamad.I also remember my old play mates at mchangani ,memon Abdulwahid,Ramju etc.From Holis Road residence we moved to Sonara Build near petrol pump opp ZNP HQ. I first studied at Sir Euan Smith Madressa and after passing my entrance exams I studied form I and II at King George the VI secondary school.I passed form to and moved to form IIIA but did not have chance to attend the class thanks to John Okello..Our principal was Sir GG Davis.My classs teacher was Miss Burney miss English .Maths teacher D'sousa etc.I left Zanzibar after the bloody revolution and at present I am at Porbandar India. Going to your wonderful site I returned to my child hood where I spent 17 wonderful years.They are now just sweet and nice wonderful dream. Now I have an urge inside me to once visit the beautiful and peaceful island where I spent 17 years of my childhood at Forozani,nazimoja or enjoyed the english/hindi movies at either sultana/empire or the majestic.I am sixty one now but if any one once ask me what was the most memorable and which part of my life i enjoyed the most and cherished and my answer would be my childhood at Zanzibar. Before that let me introduce a bit of my back ground.Im one of the people's child that once called themselves comrades living in exile forsome time like my parents and part of his crew.Well, let me get to the point. The modern Zanzibar is also very fragile because of CCM and CUF. Most of CUF supporters think the most people who have rights within the party are Pembans and that is a big mistakes and very dangerious.The only solution for a better Zanzibar is to remove these two parties of CCM and CUF [edited out] becuse we already know that CCM are ignorants and most of the CUF leaders were among CCM cabinet trying to fool people around BELIEVE ME THE END IS VERY NEAR. CCM will parish and for their own good CUF will rearrange their system or otherwise. CCM(A.S.P) BETRAYED us once and we wont let it happen again. WE LINGER SOMEWHERE WAITING FOR THE ORDER! THE BETTER REVOLUTION IS COMING AND THE KARUME NAME WILL BE [edited out] OUT IN OUR BEAUTIFUL ZANZIBAR AMEN!

Assalam Aleykum If it is not any inconvenience, I want to know more about the Zanzibar Revolution and its effects on the minorities with regards to their persecutions and what forced their migrations to the maniland and other parts of the world. I am referring mainly to the asian, hindu and christian minoroties. Then maybe you can gradually find out more of the arab population that either intermarried or left for oman or the mainland. A great many people died in this period and a great many have never been accounted for. Oppositions have always maintained that Zanzibar has a "Guantanamo Bay" kind of prison for captives where all these missing people have been kept.. We are looking at the past with interest so keep the conversation as intellectual as possible.. I have known many from Zanzibar and they have told me stories that can show what effects can independence have to all the population.. I will look forward to your findings in your articles. My name is Maryam Shaaban Mgambo. I was born in Zanzibar in 1960s. I t was so emotional looking at the images of old Tumekuja school. Growing up in Zanzibar I attended that shool from standard 3 to form 3. I had wonderful and amazing teachers. They guided us the best they can. I stilll remember Maalim Kassim Abdullwakil, Teacher Hazam, Maalim Mohamed ABBAS, Bi Fatma Abbas, Bi Gulshan,Mr Mohamed Aley, Fatma Gharib, Suleiman Senga and more that I have trying so hard to remember their names but still remember their faces and their kindness. A most gratifying experience to be able to revisit Zanzibar again after so long. In the early fifties I was employed as a mechanical engineer in Dsm. I frequently visited Zanzibar to carry out work in copra mills, and was facinated by what I saw there I spoke some Arabic and that enabled me to learn Kiswahili fluently. I remained there until 1971 and then returned to England. I have so many fond memories of my liife in East Africa, I am now almost 80 years old, and in the proccess of writing a book to enable potential visitors to the East African coast to learn the language, it will be entitled "Kiswahili made easy" I am so pleased to have found this most exiting Web page, It is such a pleasure to be able to re-visit the places that gave me such pleasure all those years ago. An excellent website which covers a wide range of Zanzibari history up to today. The historic photos are a superb documentation of the history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although I have read a lot about the history of Zanzibar, there were many new details with which I was not familiar. Thank you very much indeed. I shall certainly use this website and recommend it to Zanzibari secondary school teachers.

Your website made me so homesick and wiser about the little bits of history I have missed out on! Keep it up and let me hope that you shall have a little more information about the former landscape of ages past - what Zanzibar's community had been, the Goans, Indians, Malagasy peoples and where they fit in the Zanzibari landscape, as they slowly merged into the society at large. Habari mizuri! I am the son of a British civil servant and lived in Zanzibar between 1948 and 1956 as a boy. I found the site very thorough and objective. The photos were taken before my time but nevertheless bring back many memories e.g the Dhow harbour; the Bet-el-Ajaib;standing to attention when the Sultan's red Rolls Royce swept by. Google Earth has a good photographic map of the island but very little labelling to locate places.

Good compilation on Zanzibar though i would like also a good link between Zanzibar and the Slave trade it was actually one of the main exit point of slaves from continental africa and up to now alot of Swahili speaking people are found in communities in Middle and far east asia. Ranti de Silva was born in Ceylon. He owned jewellery shops in Zanzibar, Dar-Es-Salaam, and Mombasa. He died after returning to Ceylon in 1957. The shop in Zanzibar was then looked after by his eldest son, Alfred, now deceased, till the revolution. His daughter who was married to the former Mayor of Galle,Ceylon and his second son, Somachandra too arel now deceased. His youngest son Keerthisiri is an Eye Surgeon who has a practice in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
